What
you need to know about golf balls to play your best:
While
golf clubs get too much credit for their ability to influence your
game, golf balls perhaps do not get enough. The technology advances
in balls have come a long way and they are more responsible for
the increased distance you see these days than anything else.
You
need to give as much consideration to the ball you use as anything
else nowadays. The three major variables to consider are:
- Spin
- Feel
- Distance
A
major problem I see is that too many poor players are using professional
type balls which spin way too much. A high spin ball can greatly
reduce your distance and control. They accentuate everything, so
a slice will slice more and a hook will hook more. In addition to
this, a high spin ball can balloon and greatly reduce your distance.
Nowadays
they are making low spin distance balls with a little softer feel.
This is ideal for the average golfer who needs the low spin distance
characteristics but doesn't want to putt a rock on the green. Most
manufacturers are putting the characteristics on the packaging so
you can see before you buy. The only way to really know is to try
them out though. If you can, I suggest taking three or four different
kinds of balls to the range or on the course if you possible, and
hit them each with the same club. Hopefully you will get similar
contact with all of them and be able to see what the feel and flight
characteristics are.
As
a general rule, if you are over a 10 handicap, don't use the balls
the pros use, they will make your scores worse rather than better.
In fact unless you are a very low single digit handicap, I would
recommend using less expensive, lower spin distance balls. You can
now find them with a softer feel so you can feel like you are playing
the pro balls.
