The Week on the tours:

Phil Mickelson phinally got his first major, and did it in style. A back nine 5 under 31 was one better than Ernie Els' 67 to take the Masters with an eighteen foot birdie putt on the eighteenth hole. Mickelson was nearly perfect on the back nine, and birdied two of the most difficult holes, the par three 16th and the hardest hole on the course, the 18th. Mickelson continued to make the medium range putts which gave him victory after losing his lead by going 2 over on the front nine. For the 14th year in a row a player from the final group won the tournament.

There were two aces on the famous 16th and they happened in back to back groups from Padraig Harrington and Kirk Triplett. It appeared that Els was in charge after going eagle on the two par fives on the back nine. But Mickelson birdie the more difficult holes to deserve the victory. It was Mickelson's 47th major and he now is just a great champion rather than the best player to never win a major. We remember what happened when David duval got the monkey off his back. Don't be surprised to see Phil contend for every major this year. Either that or he will go flat for the rest of the year.

Another great story was low amatuer Casey Wittenberg. Reminiscent of of Matt Kuchar's run when Tiger won his first in '97, Wittenberg shot 69 on Sunday to finish tied for 13th and qualify for next years Masters.

We picked the winner at Lowerscoregolf this year. Being a lefty myself I have always been a big Mickelson fan. Congratulations Phil, you were far from choking like many others predicted.

Here's how our top five picks for the Masters fared:

Tip of the week:

Tracking your game

Tracking your game is not only interesting but can also drastically reduce scores. By keeping track of your fairways hit, greens hit, number of putts, up and downs, and sand saves, you can start to see clear patterns that will show you where to focus your attention on the golf course.

Keeping track of these things does not have to distract you from your game. On each hole simply put a check mark above your score to the left for fairway hit, above right for green hit, below right for number of putts. Then put an "s" for whether or not you went into a greenside bunker. At the end of the round you can tally these stats.

For every one putt see if you were on the green in regulation or you chipped and then one putted. This would indicate a successful up and down, or sand save if you were in the sand. A two or three putt where you missed the green indicates a failed up and down.

Your goal (no matter what your handicap) should be to hit between 8-10 fairways, 10-14 greens, 32 or fewer putts, and 40-50% up and down and sand saves. When you do not reach these goals on a regular basis, you can focus your practice on these areas. Anyone can achieve the above if playing the appropriate tees for their ability. Hitting two more fairways and greens, and shedding two putts per round, can lower your scores by up to ten shots!

Our LowerScores Manual will help you do this and more.

There is also a great online tracking/handicap system that can help you. Click here for more information.

Product Review:

I have always been interested in Yoga and the Martial Arts. It took me a long time to learn to apply it to golf. Yoga may be the best way to build overall, flexibility, endurance and peace of mind there is. Here is the best I have seen.

The instructor is a regular on the Golf Channel, and is a member of the Golf Magazine fitness panel. She knows her stuff and has tailored it to the game of golf. She will show you how a few exercises can get you warmed up and allow you play with less back pain and more flexibility throughout your round.

I highly recommend this especially if you have back pain or lack flexibility.
