Nothing
will balloon your scores quicker than missing two to four
foot putts, especially when the pressure is on. Nothing will
build your confidence more than making a short putt early
in your round.
On
short putts you need to make sure you do not take a lot of
time to think about it. I suggest you look at the line, step
up to the ball and hit it as soon as you are settled. Tension
is the reason for most putts inside four feet to be missed,
and tension is caused by standing over the ball too long.
I
would also encourage you to stand with your feet quite close
together (if it is not too windy), and keep your elbows tucked
to your body. This will help you keep your swing on line as
it creates more of a natural pendulum effect.
You
rarely need to aim outside of the hole on short putts because
they should be hit firmly enough that there is little break.
Whether you are chipping or putting try to make sure that
if you miss you leave yourself the straightest short putt
possible, preferably uphill so you can hit it firmly without
having another tough one coming back. Whatever you do, do
not decelerate the putter, and be sure to follow through to
the hole.
